2/1/12 to 2/29/12 Hilton Head Island Gullah Celebration
Leap into this living history beginning February 1 and running through February 25th, 2012, when the Native Island Business and Community Affairs Association, Inc. (NIBCAA) hosts the Sixteenth Annual Hilton Head Island Gullah Celebration.
The 2012 schedule of events will include De Aarts Ob We People XV Art Show & Sale, an Ol’ Fashioned Gullah Breakfast, National Freedom Film, “Remnants of Mitchellville”. A Taste of Gullah – Food & Entertainment, The Arts, Crafts & Food Expo on Presidents Day Weekend, The Youth Musical and culminating with the Marsh Tacky Horse Run on Sunday, March 18, 2012.

The palate-pleasing combination of signature food tastings from top local restaurants will be paired with well-known Lowcountry authors and topped with an exciting “The Heat Is On” chefs’ competition at Literacy Volunteers of the Lowcountry’s 6th Annual Cooks & Books, on Sunday, February 12, 2012 from 11:30 to 3:00 at The Westin Hilton Head Island Resort & Spa. The Westin is the proud Presenting Sponsor of the event.
Cooks & Books promises to be an afternoon of culinary delights and entertainment. Sonny Dixon of WTOC-TV Channel 11 in Savannah will serve as master of ceremonies. Admission to Cooks & Books is $15 per person in advance and $20 at the door. The ticket includes unlimited tastings, access to the Lowcountry authors, the chefs’ competition, “The Heat Is ON” and the opportunity to vote for a favorite tasting in “The Peoples’ Choice.” Tickets may be purchased online (see above) or by calling (843) 815-6616.

All proceeds from this event will support the Leadership 2012 Class project to provide a place for information about Mitchelville. Information on the site is desperately needed today. The Visitor Information Center would provide in-depth educational exhibits about the cultural history of Mitchelville. It would also be a gathering place for school class trips and a tourist point of interest. Approved by Hilton Head Island – Bluffton Chamber of Commerce Board of Regents Endorsement by Town of Hilton Head Endorsement by Board of Mitchelville Preservation Project.
